Coconut Oil: The Unique Fat

Coconut oil is the best oil to use for anyone who has had their gallbladder removed, and here’s why:

With the exception of coconut oil, every fat needs the gallbladder in order to be broken down and digested. Coconut oil is made up of medium and short chain fatty acids which means when it is cold, coconut oil is a solid, and when the temperature is warm (body temperature) it is a liquid. Coconut oil is called a saturated fat.

The gallbladder is an important organ in the body, necessary for the breakdown of fats. The job of the gallbladder is to break down and emulsify fat; then pancreatic lipase comes in and further breaks the fat down into glycerol and fatty acids.

If you have no gallbladder, this is what you need to know:

Underneath the tongue are little glands called sublingual glands, when coconut oil enters the mouth; the sublingual glands release lingual lipase. This lingual lipase breaks down medium and short chain fatty acids, no other kind; as a result, the coconut oil starts to be broken down in the mouth.

Because coconut oil breaks down in the mouth, coconut oil does not need bile to emulsify it, and it does not require pancreatic lipase to be broken down. Coconut oil is absorbed directly into the blood stream, and taken to the liver and burned as fuel, thus it is the perfect oil, for someone who has no gallbladder.
